The debate over paraben free hair products

The concerns over parabens as preservatives began in 2005 with the study published by Philippa Darbe, PhD in the Journal of Applied Toxicology. This study showed concern over the concentration and accumulation of paraben-like substances found in breast cancer tissue.

This lit a firestorm of debate over the use of parabens as preservatives in all products - food, toothpaste, detergents, and personal care and beauty products.

The debate continues to linger with supporting evidence and studies supporting the safety - or lack thereof - of the use of parabens as preservatives. The one "full truth" aspect of each of these debates is that preservatives are needed - especially for hair products or their shelf life could be reduced to days.

Effective alternatives

The alternatives for a paraben free shampoo are many and some have shown to be more effective than others. Researchers have tested and evaluated several key organic or natural-based compounds which you will see in the better, upper-end products:

Grapefruit seed extract Vitamin E Germall Plus Potassium Sorbate Sorbic Acid

The best paraben-free shampoo generally uses a combination of several of these ingredients. Vitamin E is often found in reparative shampoos and grapefruit extract is common for helping protect color. So, looking for botanical extracts as primary ingredients can be a key for finding a natural-based product, but also one that improves the health of hair and scalp.

New product development

Many manufacturers whose products are natural-based, sulfate-free or paraben-free have developed formulations to take advantage of a combination of these ingredients. Why? Because it is necessary to maintain "shelf-life"...dispelling the idea that "organic" products do not contain preservatives. Simply, if they didn't, it's unlikely their products would even make their way to your home of the store shelves.

Sulfate-free brands such as Sfree®, promote a variety of products - moisturizing shampoos, clarifying shampoos and light-weight conditioners that use alternative preservatives. Their reviews have been exceptional - often surpassing the results from paraben-based products.

Paraben Free Skin Care - The Truth You Need to Know

!±8± Paraben Free Skin Care - The Truth You Need to Know

Are you using paraben free skin care products? You may have seen or heard about parabens; if you do not know what they really mean, don't worry because I am going to tell you what they mean. I will also explain why you should avoid any product that contains them.

Parabens are a group of chemicals generally used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries as preservatives. They are widely used because they are effective at prolonging the shelf lives of products and they are also very cheap; however, studies show that they may be harmful to your body.

They are often listed on products as methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl parabens. However, do not be deceived, avoid products that claim to be paraben free skin care and yet contain chemicals such para-hydroxybenzoic acid; this is also another name for paraben but if you are not aware of it, you may think that it has nothing to do with the harmful chemical.

Some parabens are naturally found in plants, but the ones used commercially are synthetic; they are used in deodorants, creams, perfumes and hair products.

It is necessary that you use paraben free skin care products because whatever you put on your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream; some studies have linked parabens to cancer because of their estrogenic properties. These studies are seen as controversial by some people; the results of these studies have also stirred up debate for and against the use of these chemicals.

Those supporting the use of parabens claim that the chemicals are safe and have been used safely over the years; however, those against the use of the chemicals claim that they are toxic and should no longer be used in the drug, food or cosmetics industry. If you are like me, you would rather play it safe by staying away from products that contain them; you actually have nothing to lose by doing so.

You should also use paraben free skin care products because, parabens can cause skin irritation, rashes, acne and rosacea; they also strip your skin of natural oil and moisture, thereby making it dry.

As the debate and studies on whether these chemicals are safe or not for your body remain inconclusive, I hope you wouldn't want to take a chance by using products that contain them; the truth is that there are better and safer natural alternatives.
